I Automated My Etsy Shop With AI

I opened an Etsy shop for the things I make, with nine products, a full-time job and no marketing budget. This is the raw, unedited version of how I list a product with one free AI prompt that reads the actual product file and writes an optimized title and description for Etsy, Gumroad or Shopify.

Key takeaways

  • Paste the prompt into ChatGPT or Gemini; both work, and free tiers handle it fine.
  • It asks five questions. Answer 1, 2, 3 and 5, then upload your product file for question 4.
  • It reads the real file, checks the platform's own listing requirements, and writes the title, summary and description.
  • AI image tools now make product images and thumbnails in minutes instead of Photoshop work.
  • I couldn't find a way to list a free product on Etsy, which charges $0.20 per listing, so the free prompt lives on Gumroad.

0:01I finally took the terrifying step of opening an Etsy shop for the things that I make myself. I have no idea if this side hustle will actually work, but I'll make a go of it. I'm Joseph Richard. By day, I'm a senior Java developer. Nights and weekends, I write an animated children's series called Forest Friends, entirely with AI tools, using Google. Okay. This is my Etsy shop. Let's do a little something different today. Just kind of give it to you kind of raw here, the way I'm doing it. I'm going to try to add a product here.

0:33Uh we'll start with Etsy. Um this is my shop. These are the products I sell. I've got about nine. So, not a lot, but it's enough for me. Um let's go ahead and let's get a product added here. And we can... This is the prompt I use. So, let's get that. Excuse me. Copy that prompt and we'll paste it inside of... I'm going to use ChatGPT. Most people seem to use that, so I think it's a common one. So, it should... It definitely works for ChatGPT.

1:08You put the prompt in. It asks you five questions. Now, from the prompt at the beginning here, you're going to have to answer... You're going to answer four of them. One, two, three, and five. Um the question four will let it prompt you again to upload whatever it is. Be it the image of an actual physical product or the PDF or doc of the actual um electronic item. Digital item.

1:43Let's do that. Let's say none. I got nothing extra additional here. Then it'll come back and it'll ask you the question. I don't have the... whatever is an image or the PDF. So, let's grab it. Go on and find the PDF. Bring that in. Okay. Let it load. Uh-huh, run it. And it should read through a digital product. It'll read through there to see what it is. And if it can get the description out, it will. It'll use that information when it builds you the... your description and your product title. Well, that's it. Yeah.

2:32Local, sorry. Local. Thinks it was something else. And there we go. There's the optimized title. So, I copy that. Let's go. Go here. We'll go back and copy it again. Copy it the first time. And my... my idea... This shortens a lot of time for me using this prompt to create the product description. Um it gives me a clean description because it reads through the item and says, "All right, this is what I see. This is what I think it is." So, it does a good job of that. I do like that. And because it's a prompt, it's going out and hitting Gumroad and Etsy and finding their requirements. When it finds the requirements, it comes back and asks you the questions you need. It goes and gets the information based on what it read out of your digital item or the image it found. For an image, it does go out and I think it hits the website and looks up that type of mug. It actually identifies what it is and where it came from and... well, it finds a similar product and puts that description up there. I don't know what uh store it uses for those products, but I did a mug my daughter gave me for Father's Day and it went out and grabbed the description and then I'm like, it's just a picture of a mug. There's no way. There's nothing to read there besides that image. So, all right, here we go.

4:18Put that in. I'm not going to create the Etsy product for free download because I've not found a way to make an Etsy product free. So, we'll do... My idea is to put the prompt up on Gumroad and you guys can download it for free. Um here I'm using Gemini this time for the Gumroad product. I actually think Gemini is a little cleaner and easier to use.

4:53It just gives me exactly what I'm looking for. Title, description, some summary text, and then away you go. Like here we are, it's going to ask for the upload. Let's grab the file again, upload it into Gemini. Let it load. We run it, we'll go through and read through the file. That's one of the instructions inside of the prompt, to make sure you read exactly what it is that you've gotten. I noticed with Claude it doesn't...

5:28it was having problems doing that. Okay, there you go. Product name, summary, um and then sales page, which is basically the description. You copy that and just put it inside of the product here. What's your product name? Now, the summary next. Um this should work for Shopify as well. Um but this is something I found: if you're not using an AI tool, if you want to start, you can drop this into ChatGPT. Your free version should be able to do this. Especially if you're doing a digital product. Uh an image, I believe so as well. I know with Gemini, things work a little different if you have a free version versus a paid version. I've noticed that. I've noticed that with Claude as well. Um some of the tools... they work, but they will come back and tell you they don't work if you're not paying for the full version. There's things that say, "Oh, I can't do that." But if you do the paid version, it doesn't say anything. It just does it. I notice that with Claude. I'm like, "Oh, wow. I didn't think you did that before, but now you can pretty much do everything." So, all right, let's put some stuff in here. All the pages. Uh I think it's like a four, five-page document actually.

7:07Um now with the changes, I put a cover on it and I put the actual text that you can copy from a PDF at the very back side of the PDF. The middle portions are instructions about the PDF and what it's going to do. It gives you step-by-step instructions of what the prompt says. Um but the part to copy and paste is in the very back.

7:48You want here zero, zero price product. If you go download it, just type in zero. And it'll let you... it'll take zero and let you download it. Now we need... Let's save it. We're going to have to actually upload the product itself. There you go. There's some stuff in there about the buttons, too. When you check out, there's some message you got to put on there, so we'll do that.

8:39I'm just starting with it, so all this stuff... um it's different. But it's not that difficult, and I found the prompts do help. Um I've got some other prompts as well, but right now I'm just going to do this prompt for the product. Um we'll put that up there if people want it. But yeah, I'm just a small guy, one-man band doing my thing.

9:12Um it's my side hustle. I got a job in the morning, so after hours, this is when I get a chance to work on this. Right now it's not earning a lot, but it's a passion project, I guess. And I am enjoying it. I've learned a lot from it. Um that's kind of what I want... maybe it's a tool or something people can use, so if you want it, go out and download it. It's no cost. It's free.

9:45Um we need an image, so let's generate an image for it. And then we're actually going to need to convert something into a thumbnail as well, 'cause it does ask for that. So, once we generate the image, I'll just turn the image into a thumbnail. We'll have one of the AI tools reduce it to the size we need. Yeah, I'll do that. I'll bring that in. Um we'll name it. Then we'll generate... we're going to do a picture. Yeah. Like that. We'll generate that. And then for that, we'll just put it up as the image, and then we'll create the thumbnail.

10:37But Gumroad's pretty... you can do a lot with it. It's good. It has its place. The free tool thing is very nice. Um I don't know why at Etsy I can't figure out how to do it. If somebody knows, please leave it in the comments. Um but I was looking, I don't see how to make a product free. I know they charge 20 cents just to upload it, so that's something right there. I'm like, I don't want to lose money for something I'm trying to give away, so I'll just use the other platform.

11:25And I noticed that with the AI tools, you're able to quickly turn things around. Like it would have taken me a long time to go through something like Adobe Photoshop and try to, you know, turn it into something else. Here, just drop it in, pull it up. Let it create it for you. Let it do the work for you. Same thing with the product description. I'm like, here's my product. It's a digital product. I wrote an ebook.

11:57What's a good description for it? And it reads through it and gives me the description. There's a lot of stuff like that. I do a lot of stuff like that now. I'm finding I'm doing it more and more. And I'm a lot more productive than I would be if I didn't have those tools. So let's find our uh thumbnail and we'll go from there.

12:29It's uploaded there. We should be able to... Yeah, see. That's the product. So we'll save it and it should be... Let's go out and try to find it on the page. There's that. It's uploaded. It's there. The product's there. Let's take a look. Go to the store and see if it shows up online. Um I hope this helps all of you and you're able to get some use out of this and possibly save you some time. Um I know that I'm enjoying doing this stuff. So if you have questions about the prompt or something, feel free to shoot me a comment. Um but yeah. If you get a chance, please subscribe.

13:20Um other changes are coming. I'm Joseph. This is Code, Create & Care. Have a good day. We'll see you in the next one.
